MATHS

Maths at Tillington Manor Primary School

At Tillington Manor Primary School, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our aim is to develop confident, resilient learners who enjoy exploring mathematical ideas and are able to apply their knowledge to solve problems in a range of contexts.

Mathematics is an essential life skill and we work to ensure that pupils develop strong foundations in number, reasoning and problem solving throughout their time at our school. We encourage children to think mathematically, ask questions and develop the confidence to explain their ideas clearly.

Our Approach to Teaching Maths

We follow the White Rose Maths scheme, supported by the North Midlands Maths Hub, as the spine of our mathematics curriculum. This approach provides a carefully sequenced progression of learning, allowing pupils to build secure understanding over time.

Lessons are carefully structured so that new learning builds on what pupils already know. Teachers model methods clearly, guide pupils through new concepts and provide opportunities for children to practise, discuss and apply their understanding.

Our approach focuses on helping children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, rather than simply learning procedures. By revisiting key ideas and exploring them in different ways, pupils develop confidence and flexibility in their mathematical thinking.

Developing Mathematical Thinking

Our maths curriculum focuses on three key areas:

Fluency – developing secure knowledge of number and efficient calculation strategies.

Reasoning – encouraging pupils to explain their thinking, justify their answers and use precise mathematical vocabulary.

Problem Solving – applying mathematical knowledge to a range of contexts and tackling increasingly complex challenges.

Through discussion, investigation and structured practice, pupils learn to approach problems logically and to understand the reasoning behind their answers.

What Maths Looks Like at Tillington Manor

In our classrooms, mathematics is active, engaging and discussion-rich. Teachers encourage pupils to share their thinking, compare strategies and learn from one another.

Practical resources and visual representations are used to support understanding, particularly when introducing new concepts. Children may use equipment such as counters, number lines, place value charts and other manipulatives to help them see and understand mathematical ideas.

This approach supports pupils in developing strong conceptual understanding before moving on to more abstract methods.

Supporting All Learners in Maths

At Tillington Manor Primary School we are committed to ensuring that mathematics is accessible to all pupils. Teachers use adaptive teaching strategies to support different learning needs within the classroom.

This may include carefully chosen resources, additional modelling, structured scaffolding or targeted support to help pupils access the learning successfully. Equally, pupils who are ready for further challenge are encouraged to deepen their understanding through reasoning and problem-solving opportunities.

Our inclusive approach ensures that every child feels supported, valued and capable of making progress in mathematics.

Making Connections Across the Curriculum

Mathematics is closely linked with other areas of learning and everyday life. Pupils are given opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge across the curriculum, helping them understand the relevance and importance of maths beyond the classroom.

Our curriculum is fully aligned with the expectations of the National Curriculum (2014) and aims to prepare pupils with the skills, understanding and confidence they need for the next stage of their education.

Our Aims

We aim to ensure that our curriculum for Mathematics enables all pupils to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Times Table Rockstars

At Tillington, we are very lucky to have access to Times Tables Rock Stars which is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice for your children.  This allows them to practice their times tables in a fun and interactive way, encouraging competition and pupil led learning.  The more they practice, the more coins they earn to spend on their avatars and each time they collect coins, they move up the in class/school leaderboard.  The image above takes you to the website and all children in school should have a log in to access the website.

White Rose 1-Minute Maths

1-minute maths offers children engaging and easily accessible practice in basic number. There’s no specific route or starting point. Having chosen a topic, each user answers a series of randomly generated questions (a different set of questions every time means they learn the concept, not a sequence of answers).

When the one minute’s up, the questions are automatically marked and presented on a breakdown screen, giving instant feedback on how they’ve done. If they’re struggling with a question, a ‘Hint’ button reformats the question as a familiar manipulative display that mirrors the approaches used in the White Rose Maths schemes of learning.
